September is the start of Spring, and to us, South Africans, that means it’s time to get the braai up and running. With the warmer days, we tend to enjoy spending more time outdoors, soaking up our beautiful summer sun and loving the smells of braaied meat.
We’ve all enjoyed a braai for lunch and dinner, but have you tried Breakfast on the Braai? What a fun way to start the day, with a delicious breakfast cooked on the braai. Rise and Shine, it’s braai time!
Some ideas that you can try cook on your Breakfast Braai is:
- Braai Broodjies
- Scrambled Eggs
- Breakfast Kebabs
- Shakshuka
Braai Broodjies
To start, we will go with the most obvious option. Braai Broodjies (toasties). Everyone loves a Braai Broodjie, and they are a great breakfast option. Spice up your breakfast broodjie, and add a fried egg inside. The recipe below serves 2 and can be adjusted to how many guests you will be feeding.
Ingredients:
- 4 Slices of Bread
- Butter
- Your Choice Chutney
- Creamy Peri Peri Sauce
- 1/4 Onion, chopped and fried
- 1 cup Cheese, grated (can mix Cheddar and Mozarella)
- Salt and Pepper
Directions:
- Butter the bread on both sides.
- Spread Chutney and Creamy Peri Peri Sauce on the inside of the bread.
- Add the fried onions and grated cheese.
- Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- Close the sandwiches and place them in a sandwich grid to toast over medium coals.
- Grill and turn over when the one side is golden.
Scrambled Eggs
You will need a cast-iron skillet/pan to cook your eggs on the fire. Alternatively, some braais have a skillet option to add.
You can easily add Breakfast Sausages or Bacon to be grilled on the side directly over the coals.
Ingredients:
- 10 Large Eggs
- Salt and Pepper
- 1 Jalapeno, seeded and chopped
- 2 Tbsp Butter
- 1 cup Onions, chopped
- 3 Tbsp Chives, minced
- Breakfast Brown Sauce
Directions:
- In a large bowl, whisk the eggs with salt and pepper.
- Place a skillet on the grill to get hot.
- In the skillet, once hot, melt the butter and grill the onions and jalapenos until tender.
- Add the eggs and cook.
- Once ready, add the minced chives and stir.
- Serve the eggs together with the meat of your choice and pour over a decent amount of Breakfast Brown Sauce.
Breakfast Kebabs
A fun and different addition to your breakfast braai are these fantastic Breakfast Kebabs.
Ingredients:
- 500g Breakfast Sausages
- Sauce-a-licious BH Basting
- 1 can Pineapple Chunks, drained
- 250g Button Mushrooms, cleaned
- Butter, Melted
- Maple Syrup
Directions:
- Pre-cook the sausages on the braai, basted with Sauce-a-licious BH Basting.
- Remove from the heat.
- Soak your wooden skewers.
- Thread while alternating: sausages, pineapple and mushrooms.
- Brush with melted butter and syrup.
- Grill over medium heat, turning and basting as you turn with more syrup until the ingredients are browned.
Shakshuka
Enjoy a hearty breakfast on the fire using a single flat-bottom potjie.
Ingredients:
- 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
- 1/2 Small Onion, diced
- 1 Garlic Clove, minced
- 1 Red Pepper, seeded and diced
- 2 tins Diced Tomatoes
- 2 Tbsp Tomato Paste
- 2 Tbsp Sriracha Sauce
- Salt & Pepper
- 4 Eggs
- 1/2 Tbsp Parsley, chopped for garnish
Directions:
- Heat up the oil in the pan on the grill.
- Fry the onions until transparent.
- Add the garlic and continue to cook.
- Add the diced peppers and cook for 5 minutes, until softened.
- Add the tomatoes and tomato paste and stir until well blended.
- Add the Sriracha Sauce and let the sauce cook for a few minutes.
- Crack the eggs onto the tomato mixture.
- Cover the dish and allow to cook for a further 5-8 minutes.
- Garnish with the chopped parsley.
