4 Ways to Cook Mince Meat on the Braai?

Mince Meat is a cheaper meat that is easily accessible to find. So following braai month, we thought we would discuss various recipes, using mincemeat, that can be made on the braai.

Hamburgers

To start with the obvious, a burger patty, is a sure winner with your mincemeat. Go for a lean mince when preparing these homemade burger patties.

All you will need to make delicious hamburger patties:

  • 500g Mince Meat – we prefer a lean mince.
  • ½ Onion – finely chop your onions.
  • 1 teaspoon Your Choice Worcester Sauce – adds a smoky flavour to the burgers
  • Seasoning – We like to add Salt & Pepper, Mixed Herbs & Nou Gaan Ons Braai BBQ Grill.

You can play around with the seasoning to see what you like best. Add some Peri Peri seasoning for spicy burgers, or add Nou Gaan Ons Braai Braai Spice for a smokier flavour.

To make your patties takes only a couple of minutes.

Mix your Mince Meat, Spices and Onions. You can choose to use egg or breadcrumbs to help bind but it’s not always necessary. We find it best to use your hands to thoroughly combine all the ingredients together.

Grab equal portions of the mincemeat, depending on what size burger you are looking to land up with. Roll into balls and flatten with the palm on your hand or the bottom of a plate and place onto a lined tray. Press a dent in the center of each patty, so they don’t puff up while cooking.

Once the patties are made you can head on outside to the braai and start cooking. Baste the burgers with Your Choice Monkey Gland sauce for a barbecue flavour. Toast your Burger Rolls on the top of the braai for a few minutes.

Once your burger patties are cooked to perfection, create the most delicious Hamburger roll with a variety of garnishes and Your Choice sauces: Hamburger Sauce, Chutney, Tomato Sauce, Chilli Tomato, Peri Peri & Chip Sauce. And there you have your own home-made Gourmet Burger.

Beef Mince Sticks

Tired of Chicken Sosaties? Why not mix them up with Beef Mince Sticks. Traditionally, a Mediterranean inspired dish of Keftas, these Beef Mince Sticks are easy to make and enjoyable to eat off the braai. They can easily be made ahead of the meal to pass around as a starter.

Prepare your ingredients ahead of time and place the sticks on the braai when your guests start arriving. You will need:

  • 500g Mince Meat – we use a lean mince.
  • 1 teaspoon Olive Oil – use an extra virgin olive oil to create a smokiness while cooking on high heat.
  • Spices – ½ teaspoon Cumin, 1 ½ teaspoon Smoked Paprika, 1 tsp sea salt & pepper

Mix the beef, cumin, paprika, salt and pepper together in a bowl. Divide the mince mixture into 8 portions and press each portion firmly onto skewers. Coat with olive oil to ensure they don’t stick onto the braai.

Place on a hot braai and cook the kebabs for about 10 minutes, turning 3-4 times and until well-browned on the outside and cooked on the inside. Place of a serving platter surrounded by your favourite Sauce-a-licious dips: Chillinaise, Garlic & Herb, 1000 Island, Sweet Chilli & Barbados Twist.

Bacon Wrapped Meatballs

An appetizing dish, whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner, it is always a winner.

Your ingredients will include:

  • 500g Mince Meat – lean or 80:20 ratio will work for these
  • Breadcrumbs – ½ Cup
  • ½ Onion – finely chopped
  • Spices – we use garlic, salt, pepper
  • 1 Egg – to bind everything together
  • Mozzarella Cheese – grated and enough to your liking
  • Rashers Bacon – slice in half to fit around the meatballs
  • Nou Gaan Ons Braai Sticky Chicken – don’t let its name fool you as it is delicious to use on all meats.

To make your Meatballs, in a bowl you will need to mix your mince, breadcrumbs, onion, spices and egg together. Using your hands will give you the best results. Mix until thoroughly combined.

Roll the mixture into golf ball size. With your thumb create a dent in the balls and add a bit of the grated mozzarella and then seal closed. Roll the bacon rashers around the meat balls and head on over to the braai.

Start to cook the Meatballs, do not place on direct heat, and after a couple of minutes baste with Nou Gaan Ons Braai Sticky Chicken. Close the lid of the braai and allow to cook for a further five minutes and baste again. Repeat the process until fully cooked.

Meat Loaf

Something different to try is a Mince Loaf recipe cooked on the braai.

You will need:

  • 1kg Mince Meat – an 80:20 mix of mince is used in this recipe
  • 3 Tablespoons Flour – Potato Flour can be used as an alternative
  • 4 Eggs – 1 raw egg and 3 hard-boiled
  • 1 Onion – diced finely
  • Spices – salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder
  • 1 Cup Sauce-a-licious BH Basting
  • Water
  • 2-3 Tablespoons Oil
  • 2 Teaspoons Marmite – adds flavour for the gravy

Mix Mince Meat with the spices together in a dish. Add 1 raw egg and mix together. Add your chosen flour to bind the loaf. Wet your hands and shape the meat mixture into a loaf. Make a well in the centre of the loaf and place the hard-boiled eggs longways. Close the Mince Meat over the top of the eggs. Use a skittle with oil and the diced onions to sear all sides of the loaf for a couple of minutes. Reserve the oil in the skillet to use later.

Take the meat and place in a baking tin and close the baking tin with two layers of heavy-duty foil. Place a few coals on top. Remember the baking tin needs to be relatively close to the heat. Let it cook for an hour and once ready carefully remove the coals and foil and turn upside down onto a plate.

Pour Sauce-a-licious BH Basting into the skillet with the leftover oil and onions, add water and marmite and cook until it thickens. This will be used as a gravy.
